Background

The NJDOT project encompasses an 11+ mile section of Route 287 in both directions, extending from south of Exit 47 to north of Exit 58. This section is situated in various counties and municipalities: Morris County – Montville Township, Pequannock Township, Kinnelon Borough, and Riverdale Borough; Passaic County – Bloomingdale Borough, Pompton Lakes Borough, and Wanaque Borough; and Bergen County – Oakland Borough. The existing concrete pavement along this Route 287 section requires repair to enhance its service life as part of the Ramapo River project.

Proposed Project

The NJDOT has proposed a plan to repair the existing concrete travel lane pavement on Route 287, rehabilitate the shoulder pavement, and apply a high-performance thin overlay (HPTO) pavement across the entire roadway. Selected interchanges will see resurfacing of ramps as part of this initiative. Additionally, the project will include the replacement of existing guiderail and traffic signals at the entrance and exit ramps, which is part of the broader Ramapo River project scope.

During the construction phase of this Route 287 project, temporary lane closures will be necessary during non-peak hours. Furthermore, temporary detours will be implemented when resurfacing the pavement or replacing guiderails on the ramps.

Historical and Cultural Resources

Federal regulations regarding the protection of historic properties, known as the National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 process, mandate that NJDOT considers the impact of proposed projects, such as the Ramapo River project and improvements along Route 287, on historic resources listed in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

As part of the Section 106 process, NJDOT is required to seek public input. Historic preservation organizations, historical societies, and individuals with knowledge of cultural resources (whether archaeological or architectural) in the project area are encouraged to share their comments at the end of the virtual Public Information Center presentation. Alternatively, feedback can also be submitted via email or mail to:
